Greetings and salutations!
I have safely returned from 11 days in sunny (that's politically correct for hot and humid) Florida. We had a modeling event for one of my daughters, and then we spent a week in Walt Disney World. Surprisingly, I did not get a bad sunburn in the experience. In fact, the only "burn" I got was on my nose, and that is very minor. I guess living in Colorado and being 1 mile closer to the sun has accustomed my skin to the rays. I know that's not necessarily true, but I'm sticking with that story.
Saturday, as you probably already know, is Pioneer Day, so I chose many songs in honor of the day. Lonesome Roving Wolves describes some of the hardships experienced by the pioneers. How Firm A Foundation isn't necessarily a pioneer song, but I think of it as one of the fundamental hymns in the early days of the Church. I have the same feeling towards A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief. And, I saved Margaret Young Boyle for last. She is a true pioneer, and traveled across the plains as a young girl in conditions as described in her song.
As I mentioned at the end of Show 80, I put the show together on July 3 and 4, because I knew I wouldn't have the opportunity to do a show after arriving home from Florida on Saturday night. After doing the recordings for show 79, I think I mentally already left for Florida, and I had some interesting recordings that I editted out of the show. Since they are a little stranger than the normal bits I edit out, I saved them to two files and uploaded them to the server. Those of you who read this blog and those on Facebook will have the links to the files, but they won't be available via iTunes. You can download the files at Show080_Outtake1.mp3 and Show080_Outtake2.mp3. I have to confess....I did edit a burp out of the Outtake1 clip. I didn't think you'd want to hear that.
I am gathering ideas for the next show, so if you have any suggestions on what you'd like to hear, drop me a quick e-mail and let me know what you'd like me to play. I'm working on getting a couple of new artists on the show, so hopefully I'll have music of theirs to play in the next show. Oh, and if you have an idea for a theme show, such as "All Acoustic" or "All A'Capella" or a seasonal theme, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
I hope you all have a great week, and I look forward to "seeing" you again on the next show! |

Happy Independence Day
I hope those of you in the United States or its territories had an enjoyable holiday today. A lot of the testimonies shared in church today were centered around the liberties we enjoy and the inspiration of the founding fathers. It gave a new feeling to the holiday.
Today's show introduces two new artists to the show, Patti Miner and Simple Grace. I met both of these artists on Facebook. I am on Facebook all the time these days. Mallory Seamons, one of the three ladies in Simple Grace, is the daughter of Launi Petterson, a friend of mine from high school. I put a call out on Facebook looking for new music, and I found Patti and Simple Grace. I hope you enjoy the songs from them that I chose for this show.
As a side note, this 4th of July is the strangest, weather-wise, that I've experienced. Right now in Denver, at 9:13 PM, it is pouring rain and it's pouring rain. Usually, we're enjoying a balmy night and swatting away bugs. Not this year. :-)
I've already got everything chosen and ready to go for show 80. Once you hear it, you'll know why I'm so prepared for this show.
I hope you all have a great weekend and enjoy the show.

Show 78 - Better Late Than Never |
|
I have just released Show 78. It was a day late, and a bit hurried. My apologies if it sounds rushed. I took a somewhat unexpected trip to Salt Lake City Friday right after work and spent the weekend there with family. I was fortunate to have my oldest daughter go with me, and we spent a lot of quality time together. There's not much else to do along I-80 in Wyoming than talk so we did a lot of that. :-) We also had the opportunity to spend a little time on Temple Square. It was the first time for my daughter (now 20 years old) to visit Temple Square. We were in the Tabernacle when they were doing the demonstration of being able to hear a pin being dropped near the podium, and we were standing in the back of the Tabernacle. The acoustics are amazing! We also took a quick tour of the conference center, and that was the first time for me to see the building. Quite beautiful! I wish I was able to spend more time. It would be easy to spend two days or more visiting Temple Square and all the fascinating Church history and facilities nearby.
When choosing the songs for Show 78, I had picked 6 artists that haven't been played in a while. I listened to the first 5 songs selected, and when I played the last, I realized it didn't quite fit. Five of the songs I chose were mellow, and the sixth group doesn't have a mellow song on their album. I had to push them out to Show 79 and find a mellow song to take its place.
Last Sunday was Fathers' Day in the United States, so I hope all of you fathers, grandfathers, greats, and future fathers all had a great day. I returned home from my trip on the evening of Fathers' Day, and was greeted by my other happy kids and my wife with goodies and awesome cards. I got such a great reception when I got home, maybe I should go away more often! :-)
We will be celebrating Independence Day in the United States before the next podcast is released. I'm sorry to say that I don't have any patriotic music in my library that I can play on the show. I'll have to see if I can round up some appropriate music for next year. Pioneer Day is coming up, and I have some good ideas for music to play in Show 80, which will be released 5 days before Pioneer Day.
I am always looking for new music, new artists, and ideas for upcoming shows, so if you have any ideas, use the "Contact Us" link above and let me know. I will be playing a new artist in the next show, Simple Grace. One of the three ladies in Simple Grace is the daughter of one of my high school friends. It truly is a small world!
Thanks for your support of the podcast! I enjoy creating each show, and I hope you enjoy the music that I select each time. Our download numbers are going up, so it looks like the word is going out that LDS Music Today is back. That's awesome! Until next time. |

Show Number 77 And A Special Night |
|
Hello, and happy Monday!
I have just published show #77. There are some great songs in today's show. Some of the songs pay tribute to fathers, since Father's Day will happen before the next show is published. One of the artists, Eclipse, is a newcomer to LDS Music Today. I recently received an e-mail from the group who gave enthusiastic permission to play their music.
Other news - I am waiting to receive an agreement from Deseret Book which will allow me to play music from their labels on the show. That will double the number of songs that I can play on the show. I have a new CD from another artist who will be a newcomer to the show. And, I am looking at new CD's that I can add to my library to introduce even more artists to the show.
Lastly, I had a wonderful experience Saturday night. I have recently retired from The Colorado Mormon Chorale. This past weekend, The Chorale had the honor of performing the last concerts of the season with none other than Alex Boye'. You probaby know Alex from The Mormon Tabernacle Choir - he is a featured soloist for the Choir. A member of the Chorale knows Alex, in fact, helped Alex enter the United States from London many years ago, and asked him if he would perform with The Chorale. The show was simply amazing. Alex is quite the performer, and it was awesome to see him live, and hear both his vocal talents and his inspirational words between songs. I was fortunate enough to get his autograph and have a picture taken with him. You can see the picture here on Facebook. Click on my Photos tab, then scroll down to my Mobile Photos section. (I know - there are some strange pictures in my album - what can I say?) :-) I asked Alex if he was familiar with the podcast, and he said he was. I am hoping to be able to play him in an upcoming show very soon. By the way, you can find several videos of Alex performing on YouTube - just go you www.youtube.com and search for Alex Boye (you don't even need the accent on the "e" when you do the search.)
I hope you all have a great week, and if I don't post again before the date, happy Fathers Day to all you dads out there! |
